Santa Monica High School, aka Samohi, celebrated their newest campus buildings in a ribbon-cutting ceremony in December. The buildings represent Phase 3 of SMMUSD’s multi-year campus renewal plan for the high school located in the heart of Santa Monica.
The Exploration building supports academy-based learning for four programs including Law & Policy, Engineering/STEM, Medical/Health Services, and Multi-Media Productions. State of the art facilities for visual arts, ceramics/sculpture, photography, and film are also included. A large central “pitch” area supports students sharing their projects and ideas with other students ass well as outside business partners.
The Gold Gym replaces an existing aging facility with new PE and athletics spaces including the main gymnasium, and auxiliary gym, dance and cheer studio, aerobics and yoga studios as well as offices, locker rooms and other supports.
The project was designed through a collaboration of MRY Architects and HED. BrainSpaces completed the space planning for the entire project, design collaboration with the architectural team, and academy planning and development with staff and teachers.

Student Testimonial
"As part of the Samohi Mock Trial team, I can attest to a tremendous difference the facility makes to our future. We are now able to invite other schools to come to our courtroom for scrimmages and notice their highly impressed reactions. Our competitions are in real courthouses, so being able to prepare in closely simulated environments gives us the edge, the confidence, and the nudge to do better, to win, and to help others around us. This new building is a symbol that this district is setting us up for the best possible future in fields we are passionate about. On behalf of my classmates and all future students, I thank you!"
